I agree we should stick to the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Sunshine)
for postings to the list. Complicated stuff could go on the website with
just a link and brief explanation to the list so that only the interested
need apply :-)

By the way, I did manage to extract one JPEG from Geoff's file, which I
have attached.

Hi All,
I rarely post but do read the emails and noticed nothing from Diane Lam. Is
she still on the list?

Hi Janet − Diane left the list several months ago. She said she was on so
many lists something had to go, but she may be back sometime :-)

By the way, do you think you miss much orchid-talk mail? Your ISP appears
to blacklist my ISP every so often...

Please would subscribers using the following ISPs check to see if you can
add orchid-talk to their 'whitelists':

bigpond.net.au

btopenworld.com

verizon.net

bellsouth.net

shaw.ca

Always assuming you get this message, of course! :-)

Hi Tricia,
Really hard for me to tell if I miss much orchid-talk mail. I don't know
how much you send. Sorry, and thanks for the response about Diane.

Subject: [OrchidTalk] For Ronbow and Les
Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2006 23:00

Hi Ronbow, Les and anyone else who requires an explanation of whitelists.
Broadly speaking, many ISPs including bigpond.net.au employ a spam
filtering system. Mail servers who they regard as persistent offenders are
put on a 'blacklist' and mail from them is returned to sender. This causes
a problem when they block *all* mail from an ISP's servers rather than the
individual offenders. However, in an attempt to address this, some of them
have the facility for customers to specify certain addresses to be put on a
'whitelist' which means mail from them is allowed at all times.

I should stress that this doesn't cause me a particular problem, but I was concerned that some members were missing a significant amount of list mail.

The ISPs named in my original message are the ones who regularly return
mail, due to the particular method of filtering employed. My ISP uses a
system whereby they set up dummy addresses which they monitor for spam, so
they can more easily tell genuine mail from spam. This means they hardly
ever ditch genuine mail but some spam does tend to get through before the
'trap' is triggered. I prefer that method because it means the chances of
genuine mail being dumped is remote.

Regards,

Subject: Problems, shroblems...

My change of broadband supplier led to the peculiar position that my old
supplier I supposed (?) cut me off from sending − but allowed mail to be
sent to me- at least at the moment, but my new supplier can't connect me,
until my old supplier does the necessary release ( I may not be using the
correct technical words here) at the exchange. And I wait and wait for that
to happen. I have saved this message, and tried to send it every day − it
bounced, but when you do read it, I'm connected. Or have found a way
round....

I strongly advise anyone considering changing to UK Online to think again.
They have not − it seems − signed up to the Industry Code of Practice, so
they cannot (usefully) be reported to Ofcom for their bad practices.

To switch broadband, you need a MAC code ; they ignored my e-mail and
written requests for one for almost 3 months , and when I telephoned , they
switched me to a "special department which deals with this" where I hung on
for a whole hour, just getting recorded messages about why they are so
wonderful. I only got one in the end by threatening to write to all the
newspapers exposing them.

And what had they done wrong that I wanted to change ? Well , for a start ,
they promised me 100Mb for a web site, and when I asked about it, I was told
I could only have 2Mb , and if I wanted more, to make out a case, and they
might consider ( no entitlement ! ) giving me another 2, and so on. "100 is
merely the absolute limit which you could in theory reach, eventually" .
And then I had a problem sending , and rang them to see if they had server
problems , which they denied. I wasted half a day following their
instructions making changes to my system to no avail, until it occurred to
me to try out the server with my lap-top , and then had exactly the same
problems , making it plain that it could not be a corruption in my registry
- so I rang them again , and this time they came clean and admitted that
their server was giving problems. And so on...

After another hour trying different things I found a way to keep UK as my
outgoing smtp server and virgin as my incoming server ( I think) so will try
and send this now, using these newly invented settings.

Geoff,
I don't know if I am unique in having nothing but praise for Tiscali's Broadband facility. When they have a problem (v.rarely) they admit it immediately to save customer hassle. True, their helpline is to India where very helpful staff understand that we English may have difficulkty with their accents but they have infinite patience and with good humour we get the message to or from them in the end.

This is my first attempt at seed production. It's Chysis bractescens and I am wondering how long it takes to ripen? I pollinated it in mid May and the pod is now about 5 cms (2 in.) long

My serious suggestion is to fly into Birmingham Airport at lunch-time. The
last time I did this, with two large boxes of orchids, and a wad of CITEs
and Phytos one inch thick ( I kid you not − Defra had gone mad and given me
separate permits instead of one for the importation ) − and there was no
one there in the red channel , although I stood there and shouted....

Of course if I had not a permit, it would have been different − owing to the
application of Murphy's law − which over-rides mere EC Directives.

So how would one best go about convincing the customs officer that you
invariably meet at 3 am in Heathrow, who is not prepared to believe that
your flasked seedlings are not either hard drugs or illegally collected
animals or plants? Should I get a letter from DEFRA confirming that this
interpretation is correct? What I'm trying is to establish some sort of
bullet-proof procedure, something that will solve the potential problems
as easily as possible. Suggestions from anyone who has tried?

Here's a few photos from today.

The ascocenda flowered in April so I am very pleasantly surprised with this showing − better than the last. I guess it is loving the heat as I am.

The BLC Hawaiian Leopard also flowers twice a year − a good doer and very large flowers c 11 cms (41/2 in.)

The ELC Merry Green is rather more merry yellow this year than last. Flowers are very heavy substance and a wonderful citrus smell in the mornings.

Cattleya leopoldii is one of my absolute favourites − another one with a very strong fragrance in the mornings.

Tesco is selling the large tins of bug spray at UKP2.77 at present, if like me you like to have one handy for the odd bug, go get yourself a bargain, normally sells between UKP4 to almost UKP6.
