I had a different problem. Every time I go to the site, it tells me that
I've exceed the download limit of 1Gb per day. This is despite the fact that
I've never downloaded anything.

Esther,
You are welcome to all I have on CD of the download. However, unfortunately,
my downloading of the 'Manual' was a learning process in itself and i missed
a page or two. I eventually printed it in an automated fashion direct from
the web so my stored file is still not perfect. If nobody else can offer you
a perfectly downloaded file on CD please feel free to get back to me.

downloading it again and I'll get back to you if I don't succeed.

Esther,
from what I can recall without going back into Sendspace just now, you are
presented with a series of title pages. I can't quite recall what I then did
except that, when you click on one of them you are moved on to the next
page. From then on the pages are labelled 'next' or 'previous' and you can
print from then (repeating the print command to form a queue.
Keep in touch; in about a couple of hours I should have time to go back to
sendpace and remind myself what I did! I am sure that between us we'll sort
it out.

Anyway; as a backup for what I've got I'd like a good CD version.

Just been invited for a coffee at a neighbour-friend's place. From
experience I know we won't be back until lunch (we get sidetracked onto
orchids and model railways!)
Cheers

Hi all,

I have just repotted an orchid, and the label is very worn. Can anyone please suggest the correct name/spelling, etc.

No Genus name is given, but, it looks like an Odontoglossum or one of the many crosses.

There are just these three words:

'Annabel' is the first word, then underneath is the cross between two names. First name is almost unreadable but may be......Minel, or Minet, third word is Lautrix.

Kind regards, Rocky.

Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2006 13:30

Hi group,

A while ago I bought a shallow pan of mixed hardy
orchids from a nursery. The owner had adquired it from
a grower, but he didn't give any indications as to
what was growing in the pan.

there are at least for different types of plants, of
which one has flowered and the other one is spiking
now.

The one spiking I cannot came up with anything at all,
but the one that has flowered I have researched and
thought of a posible name.

The photos are of a flower that I took of the plant,
as the flowers had open in an odd manner, and are
upside down! (although a few seem to be twisting and
coming into the correct position now).

I believe that it could be orchis spitzelii (by the
description in collins photo guide 'Orchids of Britain
& Europe'), but I could be wrong. Any other
suggestions?

Thanks,

Francis.

I too have been unable to download the pdf file. I get the same message that
it's busy or has reached its quota and to try again later. I did and was
told someone was already downloading and to try again in 45 minutes. I'll
keep trying but am not very hopeful. Jean

Hello all, I have similar problems as Ester. In my case bit were being
downloaded with great haste, 48% or so during the first hour, then things
slowed until 98% I think-was downloaded after 4hrs and 50 something minutes,
then as with Ester it informed me I had downloaded my maximum then every
thing ceased.and dissapeared into the great unknown. Like as someone else
said, I don't have a limmit and have a fast broadband service. 100
mllion-bits of something or other per whatever. Where the download is at
this moment of time only the good Lord knows. I sure don't.It doesn't appear
to be in my computer. Happy Easter. Ronbow.

Hi any of you with download problems with Veitch.
I wish I could collect accolades for the successful downloading of Veitch's
Manual but I guess it is simply a matter of luck. All I did (again just
now − at 23.00 UK Summertime) was select a folder and name it and then use
the download routine of save-ing to that folder. It took 30 min approx.
Maybe I don't go to bed too early!

Anyway, the bottom line is that if anyone would like a CD-copy snail-mailing
in the UK, simply email me direct with your address.

I have already been in contact with two of you from N.American continent and
I can cope with that too − send your address. If you happen to live on
another planet, to which postal charges are significantly high, then still
feel free to contact me and we'll work something out.

Esther,
Quite a few folks seem to have problems downloading Veitch. I don't think
there is anything very special about me or my computer kit but I have been
lucky enough to have a downloaded everything recently posted on Sendspace
and I have a complete CD now.

I also include William's Orchid Grower's Manual and Emily Pelloe's West
Australian Orchids to fill up the CD.

If you would like a copy, please let me have your snailmail address ( or
have you already done that? I can't remember).
All the best

I bought this plant over 5 years ago as a small seedling and it has grown into
a large plant, but no flowers. It stands 25 cm tall with 15 leaves and a total
leave span of 51 cm.
Can anyone tell me what to do to get it to produce an inflorescence and flowers?
Should I grow it hotter, colder, brighter, darker, drier or what?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thank you

Evening all.......after a hard days work in the garden. First full day since January 1st as it has been such a cold Spring.

Thanks for the information regarding the plant name.

Now here's a question for you all.

As I was repotting a Lycaste for a friend, I jabbed my finger on one of those very sharp strong spines, and don't it 'alf 'urt.........New Forest dialogue! It was still sore two days later.

Question is, why does this orchid, maybe not all of the species, have these spines.

My first thought was to deter any animal from eating the bulbs, or flowers, or whatever. For sure, if an animal stepped on those spines it would not try again.

What our your thoughts?

Regards, Rocky.

I recently saw a superb Doritaenopsis (Taiwan Smith X Kun-Cheng) 'Red Cat'
at an orchid society meeting and would very much like to obtain one. Any
ideas who might import orchids from Taiwan? I've looked at the Italian site
but it is not listed there.

Hi Rocky, I remember Henry Oakley mentioning these on a T.V. program. If I
remember correctly he said you can always tell a Lycaste grower by the scars
on his hands − or something like that. It is a form of protection of course
to stop animals and dare I say people from snaffling the plant. Jean

Your best bet are nurseries like Joseph Wu, Sun Moon, Orchis

shows like the RHS show (and also the BOGA show, I believe).

Good luck,

Hotter, brighter, and longer in South Florida.

I remember seeing a Vandopsis blooming in a back yard
(in full sun) and it was about 5 feet tall. The
grower said that he had it for a very long time and
didn't encourge anyone to grow it. Your hybrid is
certainly more house broken, but it may take some time.

Hi,

I was lucky enough to buy one of those at the EOC in Padova this year. It came to Europe from Water Orchids, Taiwan, but I found it "hidden" under the bench at the stand of one of the German speaking nurserieman. I don't remember his name, but will look at the exposition map to try to find out his name. It sure is a precious plant, I love it even when I'm in general not fond of Phaleonopsis type orchids.

Den. Adrasta 'Lizzie' suffered three hurricanes this
past year. All of them were left out in the yard,
half are potted and others growing on mango trees. In
the close up picture you can see they did very well.
But one cane was broken off during Katrina. I put it
in the greenhouse and waited for it to sprout a few
plants. To my surprise it bloomed. The cane is now
very weak. Even in this condition it should produce a
few plants. The cane Dendrobiums tend to kike when
they stressed(this is especially true of the nobile
group). If you want to see more of my Adrasta pictures

Two of the Taiwan people come to our more important shows − London etc. (
Joseph Wu − who do amazing new phally crosses, and the people who
(confusingly − in view of other nurseries in other countries who do the same
thing ) − call themselves "Orchis" and sell the great cattleyas, but also
some other things..

I shall be most interested to hear ! . Joseph Wu had a photograph of a
fantastic one at Dijon − something like 5 spikes of smallish flowers, but
the flowers borne very densely all the way along , and a brilliant colour. I
bought one, and it is growing , but no spikes so far.
I'm not sure what the parentage is for any Opsistylis, suspect that
Rhyncoglottis is one ? Must do some research , but have been away for a
week, and so much catching up to do...
If we know what is in the backlground, it may be possible to guess − I have
not worried about it , since I have only had it one year so far.

Geoff, hi
this information you could find in RHS register:

Opsistylis Memoria Mary Nattrass (as example)

Seed Parent: Vandopsis gigantea
Pollen Parent: Rhynchostylis gigantea

Registrant: Redlinger
Originator: Redlinger
Date of registration: 1/1/1972

so, it is another intergeneric hybrid, but what was strange for me, that it is very old hybrid (35 years old!), and I`ve read about it only in this forum! why it is so unpopular or..... hm... i am not big reader? :))))

Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2006 02:15

I've had a Plectorphora triquetra for a couple of years without much progress. It seems that for every reluctant leaf it produces, it loses one. There have been no flowers although the longest leaf is about 15cm (6") or so. It is the sole original leaf! The new ones are all shorter − perhaps 5cm. I have used Jay Pfahl's orchidspecies.com site to suggest:

warm, humidity 75%, rain watered twice a week, 50cm (20") from 4 x 8' fluorescent light tubes, potted in loose sphagnum moss in a plastic pot, fertilized once a week weakly for 3 weeks with hydorponic fertilizer then a good flushing.

Is this a difficult plant? Have you any suggestions about improvements?

TIA, Pat.

Thanks for the info. and advice on Opsistylis.
I moved it already into a position where it gets more sun. Temperature I
can't
do better than what it gets already. Winter minimum 21 and summer maximum
35 − 38 degrees C. I can only move it into more sun until it gets 'fried'.
The parentage for an Opsistylis is Vandopsis x Rhynchostylis. The difficu
lt
partner
seems to be Vandopsis, which is an unreliable bloomer and difficult to gr
ow.
So. it's all a matter of wait and see.
'ORCHIS' I bought 5 Phalaenopsis seedlings from these people in Dijon and
two
are already pushing out one inflorescence each. So, in two months or so I
should
see the flowers.
