Thanks for the unsolicited testimonial Richard !
I'll pay your fee the next time I see you (joke)

And seriously folks, if any reader just happens to be a publisher I'd love
to do another orchid book − the publisher of "Beginners Guide..." claims
that he did not make a profit ( and did not expect to make a lot − it was to
round out the range of "Beginners Guide to.." books which he sold ; hence
not interested in an0ther one, for some years .
But I did a photo-book for the same firm , which went through 2 reprints and
a 2nd edition in USA , on which he must have made a bomb − but we were
unable to agree on a fee for a completely new , revised and expanded version
of that .

Hi all,

I guess that Dr. Lim is now in prison for illegally importing so called protected orchids.

I have some questions.

1. Did CITES prevent the orchids from being uprooted in the first place..........NO.
2. Will CITES prevent this from happening in the future..........NO.
3. What is CITES doing to stop this happening in the future..........NOTHING.
4. What has happened to the orchids that were confiscated here in England.
5. Could the so called 'RARE' orchids that were confiscated be offered to a world wide known and accepted laboratory for cultivation.
6. This so called 'RARE' Paph..........is someone already cloning this plant to make masses of money, as, if it is so rare, then obviously there is big money to be made. But, if it is rare, and mega-bucks can be made by cloning etc, then before long there will be so many of them that it will be no longer a rare plant. CITES, it is about time that you saw the light !!!!!

With the best intentions, kind regards, Rocky.

Regrettably , Rocky , whatever the rights and wrongs of any of these
matters, Paphs CANNOT be cloned.
Many attempts have been made . It is said that one large USA orchid nursery
threw a few million dollars at the problem, and gave up , as being
intractable. Of course it is not intractable ( I suspect) „ but the kind of
money necessary to spend, to solve it, is just not available in a commercial
world. Now , if you win that roll-over jackpot which I read about in the
newspaper, and have a hundred million pounds looking for a home , then why
not make your name by creating the Rocky Laboratory for research into
Slipper orchid meristemming ? ( and you could slip me a few bob too , whilst
you are at itŶ)

And did I say ? After a couple of weeks in India, studying the Tiger , CITES
ain't saving that either..

Fact is, I can't exactly say what CITES is good for . Bureacracy ?

Geoff.

Mornin', Geoff and all,

Thanks for the information regarding the cloning of Paphs Geoff's............forgot all about it, and a certain friend of mine will have a friendly go at me. Then let us go on another track so to speak.

So, wait until the plant flowers, pollinate it, harvest the seed pod , and so on. And the unscrupulous person who first dug up the plant and tried to make mega-bucks from it will realise that a fortune is to be made.........until someone else does the same thing, then the plant will have thousands of brothers and sisters, and the price will crash.

Or, to put it another way, let's just suppose that I now where there are twenty Summer Lady's Tresses growing in the New Forest. I dig up and sell eighteen of them at a fantastic profit. If I sold the remaining two, then I am no longer going to have an income.

So, CITES, sit upright and listen carefully. It makes sense to encourage the prorogation of any plant that is deemed to be rare or in need of protection. So, give help and assistance to the country where these type of plants grow. Then hopefully within a few years the so called 'Endangered species' will be no longer rare........there will be thousands of them.

If that's not common sense then you people might just as well leave orchids to people who know better.

Take the recent case of Mr. Lim. That is bolting the stable door AFTER the horse has run away !!!!! Look after the horse, check the door and the bolt, and one day the mare may have a foal. And from then on.......

Regards, Rocky.

Hi!

Thanks to all those who sent answers to my query. As an interim measure I
have bought a 7inch oscillating fan from Argos for UKP9.99. However, I would
like to pursue the idea of multiple computer fans but I have a couple of
queries because like water, women and car ignitions, the consequences of bad
electrics frightens me!

(1)Normally, these computer fans would obtain their energy from the
motherboard. How do you connect them to the transformer and how do you
connect more than one to a single socket?

(2)Pictures of these fans show them open to the atmosphere. How do you
protect them against moisture and thence the general electrics? − a
breakdown of which could be disastrous.

Thanks again.

the pc fans are DC not AC dont connect to transformer they are ok in
moisture as long as you dont spray them direct if they short circuit its only 12
volts and normaly fuse protected no disaster depends on size of grn hse how
many you would require, another idea is the
car breakers yard for car heater fans ,which are 12 v you can run all these
off a car battery
which i do connected permanenty to a charger which is fused

Hello.

I wouldn't get/buy second-hand computer fans myself. Dorothy Bradbury sells
computer fans (silent and industrial), and is a knowledgeable person about
them. Try her. _She's an honest trader_.

Rocky,

Having cogitated about this since this mornigs morn. I have reluctantly concluded that you probably believe that tis me that you are maligning, even though you know in you heart that I would never treat any pensioner, including this one with any thing other the greatest of respect and understanding especially when the memory is fading and in particular a fellow orchid grower. Never mind old son, just remember that the good Lord will be aware that you are a venerable member of list@orchid talk and a respected if forgetful orchid grower and will tip the wink to St Peter to open up those Pearly Gates and welcome you to the Great Orchid Wonderland in the Sky, the land of the eternal Orchid.

May that day be many Moons away.Good luck my friend.

Mornin' Ron,

No not you old mate, but Claudia and Nik from Ratcliffe Orchids...........Claudia will no doubt box my ears for not remembering that Paphs will not clone.

I have been trying to think of what CITES might stand for.........any suggestions !!!

Maybe we could start with:

Calamitous
Interference

Hi to all, I've asked a while ago where to find all the orchid names and synonims. I believe I've found the answer on the net. There is the World checklist of monocotiledons on the kew.org web page, looks really, really fine! I would like to copy the link but as I understand it is not such a good idea. If anyone wants it, just write me a mail, wishing you a lot of flowers, Mojca from Slovenia mojca_klancic@hotmail.com
