Hi Ronbow,

I have attached a few photos of the different mediums that I have experimented with. To be quite truthful Ron, I dare say that our orchids will grow in just about anything as long as it does not rot or decay, and that it gives the plant a good foundation.

Hello Jana,

Am I correct in saying that you live in Estonia?

Yes Jana, I pot my orchids in pure stone.....all stone.....nothing else.

Some of my orchids have been 8n the same pot, full of stones for many years. There is nothing to break down, nothing to turn sour, nothing to disintegrate or rot. Very similar to the good solid bark of a growing tree.

And do not forget that many orchids grow on rocks, and boulders.

If you need any more information or photos, just let me know.

Kind regards, Rocky.

My continuing task:

I note that I can purchase the following orchids from two nurseries.

The plants are:
Encyclia cochleata, and Epidendrum Stamfordianum.

The Nurseries are:
Azienda Agricola Nardotto e Capello in Italy, and Burleigh Park Orchids Australia.

If I wanted to buy the plants from Italy it would involve NO paperwork on my part. Just the cost of the plants and post and packing.

If I wanted to buy EXACTLY THE SAME PLANTS from Australia, ha, ha, you all know what the difference is. Paperwork/CITES, and extra money.

Big question is WHY? And do not tell me it is because Britain is a E.U. Country because it has nothing to do with the NATURAL side of it.

And this is also why I getting the Customs Officials in to this argument. Just put yourself in the position of the Customs Officials at Airports and Shipping Ports. CITES can make them look very stupid, but they are not..........I have worked alongside them and they deserve to be brought into this argument.

Of course we all want the ENDANGERED SPECIES of this world of ours to be protected, but as it stands I still say that CITES are working a SCAM, a FRAUD but taking money from hobbyist importers when there is no need to.

Rocky.

If any of you would like to use my E-mail and pass it on to other interested people then please do, but also, please ask them to E-mail me direct.

I guess that many of us, when having a hybrid orchid name thrown in front of us will recognise it as an 'Old Friend'. Of course this will depend on your favourite type of orchids that you like to have in your greenhouse/home.

Being keen on Cattleyas I always recognise the label from:

Cattleya Bob Betts, and Cattleya Bow Bells. Two old and very well known hybrids. Would not be that surprised to find it for sale in the corner store. Both of these hybrids were 'Man made' and in no way are they ENDANGERED SPECIES. So why has CITES got them under its wing?????

Another newer hybrid is, Brassolaeliocattleya Greenwhich 'Elmhurst', and I expect that many of you know of it. And of course it was made by crossing THREE GENERA. Lots of hard patient work waiting to see if it would be a winner. ENDANGERED SPECIES, like hell it is!

My plant was purchased from Thailand.....arrived by post.....no paperwork, no CITES no extra scam money paid out. What a naughty boy I am!!! Or am I? I knew all about this plant, but give a heart felt thought for the poor Customs Official if he or she was asked to giver judgement on it.....should it be confiscated and sent to Kew, [heaven help us] or should we let it through?

Of course, the very same NURSERY MASS PRODUCED PLANT could be purchased in:

Japan/California/Hawaii/Norway/Canada, to name just a few.

So you can see why I want CITES to be de-regulated.

Of course we all must keep CITES purely to try and protect endangered plants from unscrupulous collectors, but we must allow free trade between all countries in respect of Man made orchid plants.

Hopefully some of you agree and will pass on my message.

Kind regards, Rocky.

Mornin' to you all,

Saw the 'attachment' in my morning Sunday paper.

Perhaps Countries outside of this so called European Union, who signed the CITES thing may now look at it in another way.

That's why, at the moment, I buy my orchids from a nursery, which is in the European Union.

I would just love to buy some orchids from nurseries around the world, but the extra scam money that I would have to give the CITES people turns me away.

PLEASE,all of you other people/nurseries out there..........wake up, you are loosing trade, and I want to buy from YOU. I want to buy orchids that are not ENDANGERED from you.

Kind regards, Rocky.

Hello Rocky,
Yes you are :), the area of your "talking" becomes wider and wider!

So we can tell that you have some kind of hydroponic, can`t we? And the
most important place takes fertilizing... What do usually use for these
plants, and have you seen any difference between stone-orchids :) and for
ex. bark-orchids?
I`ll be very appreciative if you`ll send more photos!
best regards,
Jana
